At Potiki, we believe in making pet insurance simple, honest, and transparent. That means giving you a clear picture of what’s covered—and what’s not—before you sign up. While our plans are designed to cover a wide range of health needs for your pet, there are certain exclusions and limits to be aware of.
Knowing these upfront helps you make the right decision for your furry friend and ensures there are no surprises at claim time.
What’s Not Covered?
Here are some common exclusions across our pet insurance policies:
Pre-existing Conditions
Any illness, injury, or symptom your pet showed signs of before the start of the policy (or during any applicable waiting period) is generally not covered.
Routine & Preventative Care
Items such as vaccinations, desexing, microchipping, grooming, nail clipping, and parasite control are not covered unless included as part of an optional routine care benefit (coming soon).
Pregnancy & Breeding
Costs related to breeding, pregnancy, or giving birth are excluded.
Cosmetic & Elective Procedures
Treatments such as tail docking, declawing, or cosmetic dentistry are not covered.
Behavioral Treatments
Unless recommended and carried out by a registered vet, behavioural therapies are not included.
Food & Supplements
Prescription diets, pet food, vitamins, and dietary supplements are not reimbursed.
Waiting Periods
Some conditions require a short waiting period before you can claim:
Accidental Injuries: Covered after 1 day
Illnesses: Covered after 14 days
Cruciate Ligament Conditions: Require 6 months, but you can apply for an early assessment
These periods ensure fair cover and help prevent claims for already-developing issues.
Benefit Limits & Sub-limits
Each Potiki plan includes an annual benefit limit of $20,000 or $30,000 depending on the level you choose. Some conditions and treatments also have sub-limits—for example:
Cruciate ligament: Up to $4,000 per leg
Emergency boarding: Capped at a set daily rate
Dental illness: Available only on Platinum, with a fixed sub-limit
