Easy to understand, easy to claim

Ask yourself “What happens if…?” We listened to pet owners who want what’s best for their pet and their pocket. Here’s all the seriously important stuff you should know.

What’s the difference between specified accidental injury and illness cover?

Illnesses mean a sickness or disease which is not included under specified accidental injury cover and is independent of any Pre-existing Condition.Specified accidental injuries are events you can't predict like a bone fracture or an allergic reaction to insect bites. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for more information.

What do the Potiki Perks include?

The Potiki Perks2 are worth upto $400 a year. They contain products, like flea and tick treatments. Each pack is tailored to your pet’s needs. The Potiki Perks are a separate non-insurance service to the pet insurance policy, at no additional cost to you.

Can I go to any vet?

Yes. You can go to any vet licensed to practice in Australia (not yourself). This is a big advantage if you take your pet on holidays and need immediate care in the area. If you need to find a participating GapOnly TM, simply visit

Can I cancel my policy at any time?

You may cancel your policy any time. If you do decide to cancel, we will issue you with a pro-rata refund for unused periods on annual premiums paid less any applicable government or statutory charges.

How old can my pet be for cover?

Cat & Indoor Cat Cover : Cats can be insured from 8 weeks of age. For Accidental Injury and Illness Cover and Indoor Cat Cover, your cat must have joined before its 9th birthday. There is no upper age limit for Accidental Injury Cover option, so any cat older than 8 weeks of age can join.

Dog Cover : Dogs under the Dog Cover plans can be insured from 6 months of age. For Accidental Injury and Illness Cover, your dog must have joined before its 9th birthday. There is no upper age limit for Accidental Injury Cover option, so any dog older than 6 months of age can join.

Puppy Cover : Dogs under the Puppy Cover plans can be insured from 8 weeks of age up to 6 months of age. For dogs older than 6 months of age you may take out a policy under the Dog Cover options.

What are pre-existing conditions and are they covered?

A pre-existing condition is :

A condition that existed or occurred prior to the commencement date of the first policy period or within any applicable waiting period.

A condition that you or your vet were aware of, or a reasonable person in your circumstances would have been aware of. This is irrespective of whether the underlying or causative condition was diagnosed at the time.

Whether it is a pre-existing condition will depend on its nature and experience. If your pet has a temporary condition that has not existed, occurred or shown noticeable signs, symptoms or an abnormality in the 18-month period immediately prior to your claim treatment date, it will no longer be excluded from cover as a pre-existing condition. Chronic Conditions and several other specified Conditions cannot fall within this category.

See your Product Disclosure Statement for more information and examples of pre-existing conditions.

You can apply to have Pre-existing Conditions Reviewed. See the Pre-existing Conditions page for more information.

When does my cover begin?

Your policy starts at 11:59pm the day your application is accepted. Cat, Dog and Puppy Covers have no waiting periods for specified accidental injuries, so you may claim immediately. However, illness conditions have a 30 day waiting period and where applicable cruciate ligament conditions (and cancer conditions for Indoor Cat Cover) are subject to a 6 month waiting period. See PDS for further details on waiting periods.

How do I make a claim?

Your policy comes with access to a secure pet portal where claiming is easy. Your vet may be able to do this electronically on your visit. If you are using the pet portal, simply upload your vet’s tax invoice and consult notes; for first claim you may need to include a veterinary history. Or ask your vet if they are able to submit a GapOnlyTM claim.

What if I don’t use my insurance all year?

Regardless of whether you make a claim on your pet insurance policy, you'll still have yearly access to your non-insurance benefits of yearly Potiki Essential Care Pack2 sent directly to you – plus have access to 24/7 VetChat1 online for any pet health questions, which may even save you a trip to the vet!
