Bulldogs are among the most lovable dog breeds in the world, but even with their sweet, droopy faces, it’s important to avoid feeding them poisonous foods. Though some of these foods may not harm your bulldog immediately upon ingestion, they can prove to be dangerous over time as well as fatal if eaten in large quantities or frequently enough. Here are 10 poisonous foods to avoid giving your bulldog… or any dog, for that matter!
1) Apple Seeds
Though most of the apple is safe for your bulldog to eat, the seeds contain cyanide which can be poisonous. Just one or two seeds can make your dog seriously ill, so it’s best to avoid them altogether.
2) Apricot Pits
Apricot pits contain cyanide, which can be poisonous to dogs (and humans). Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include difficulty breathing, panting, weakness, and collapse. If you think your dog has eaten an apricot pit, call your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately.
3) Avocado Skin
Avocado skin contains a toxin called persin. While the flesh of the fruit is safe for dogs to eat, the skin can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog consumes avocado skin, monitor them closely for signs of illness and contact your veterinarian if they become sick.
4) Cherry Pits
Cherry pits may be small, but they can pose a big threat to your bulldog. If swallowed, cherry pits can get stuck in your dog’s intestines and cause an obstruction. Even if they don’t cause an obstruction, cherry pits can still do damage by causing inflammation and irritation. If you think your dog has swallowed a cherry pit, watch for signs of gastrointestinal distress and call your veterinarian immediately.
5) Mushrooms
While there are many types of mushrooms, not all of them are safe for your bulldog to consume. Some mushrooms contain toxins that can cause liver damage, gastrointestinal problems, and even death. If you’re unsure about a mushroom, it’s best to err on the side of caution and keep it out of your dog’s reach.
6) Peach Pits
Like other stone fruits, peach pits contain cyanide. This toxic substance can cause your dog to experience diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness. If you think your dog has ingested a peach pit, call your veterinarian immediately.
7) Potato Skins
Just like people, our furry friends can get food poisoning, too. And while some human foods are safe for pups, others can be downright dangerous. Potato skins are one of the most common culprits of food poisoning in dogs. They contain a toxic compound called solanine, which can cause gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, and even death in severe cases. If you’re feeding your bulldog potato skins, be sure to cook them thoroughly and remove all the green parts first.
8) Rhubarb Leaves
The leaves of the rhubarb plant are the most poisonous part, containing high levels of oxalic acid. Symptoms of poisoning include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness. If your bulldog ingests any part of a rhubarb plant, call your veterinarian immediately.
9) Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family, which also includes potatoes, peppers, and eggplant. All of these plants contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid poison that can make your dog very sick. The green parts of the plant are the most poisonous, but the red fruit can also be dangerous if your dog eats enough of it. Symptoms of solanine poisoning include gastrointestinal upset, confusion, weakness, and heart arrhythmias.
10) Raw Eggs
It’s best to avoid feeding your bulldog raw eggs. Raw eggs can contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. These bacteria can cause food poisoning, which can make your bulldog very sick. Symptoms of food poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. If your bulldog ingests raw eggs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
